Job Description

Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for children over the age of five in Africa. Amend develops, implements, evaluates and brings to scale public health programmes to prevent those injuries before they happen. Amend’s headquarters are in New York City, we have country offices in Ghana and Tanzania.
Amend’s flagship Be Seen, Be Safe campaign combines various programme elements including: road-­‐safety lessons in primary schools, the distribution of printed road safety materials, working
with the media to better report road safety issues, the social marketing of reflector-­‐enhanced
school bags and more. Amend’s programme work is evaluated for efficacy and impact, using rigorous scientific analysis. Amend is refining Be Seen, Be Safe into a data-­‐backed model that can be replicated throughout the developing world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that “the interventions promoted by Amend.org, such as the Be Seen, Be Safe programme, are perfectly in line” with those being promoted by the WHO.

Position
Job title: Programme Asssistant
Terms: Fee-­‐for-­‐service position. Temporary contract. Salary: 15,000 TSH per day worked, plus expenses Reporting: Direct reporting to Programme Manager

The Programme Assistant has a vital job on the front lines of Amend’s work. Their main responsibility will be visiting schools in Dar es Salaam and beyond under the supervision of Amend’s Programme Manager and presenting Amend’s Be Seen, Be Safe road safety presentation to classes of primary school children. Be Seen, Be Safe has been proven to increase children’s knowledge of important road
safety concepts that help them stay safe as they walk and cross the road.
Each Be Seen, Be Safe presentation lasts approximately 45 minutes. Programme Assistants will make presentations to several classes a day while primary schools are in session. A Programme Assistant’s work day will last approximately 4 to 5 hours. Programme Assistants must be outgoing,
confident and have an exceptional sense of how to engage and appeal to children through presentations.

Specifically, Programme Assistants will:
• Present Amend’s Be Seen, Be Safe road safety programme to primary school children.
While the content of Be Seen, Be Safe is established – and core messages must be taught
and reinforced – Programme Assistants should also bring their own personality to the presentation.

• Coordinate and work with the Programme Manager as needed to implement Amend’s programme work. The PM is in charge of scheduling schools for presentations and
handling logistics of school visits; Programme Assistants may need to assist the PM with these tasks fromtime to time.

The Programme Assistants performance will be evaluated by his or her ability to effectively fulfill the responsibilities described above. Of particular importance is:
• Ability to consistently deliver Be Seen, Be Safe. Programme Assistants will be judged on their ability to consistently deliver the Be Seen, Be Safe road safety presentation in a manner that engages children, carefully covers all the important messages and fills the allotted presentation time without running over.
Skills
• Experience working with primary school age children.
• The ability to engage and entertain children while teaching lessons. • Extremely punctual and responsible.
• Strong command of written and spoken English and Swahili.
